Print Deploy / Mobility Print—what to use when

Some environments are best suited for using Print Deploy, while for others Mobility Print is the more appropriate choice. Use:

  • Print Deploy in managed environments with Windows and/or macOS

  • Mobility Print in BYOD environments

  • both in a hybrid environment (managed and BYOD environments).

Refer to the information below for recommendations on when to install Print Deploy, Mobility Print, or maybe both if you have a managed environment and you also offer BYOD printing.

Windows

Managed: Print Deploy. Print Deploy automates the deployment of the print queues so there’s no user interaction.

Unmanaged/BYOD: Mobility Print with mDNS, DNS, or known host printer discovery options. The user is guided to download the Mobility Print installer to run on their computers and install the print queues themselves.

macOS

Managed: Print Deploy automates the deployment of the print queues so there’s no end-user interaction.

NOTE

If you’re using Jamf Pro, you’ll be able to Mobile web client-hosted print queues to your macOS devices. We cover how to set this up in Deploy print queues using Jamf and PaperCut.

Unmanaged/BYOD: Mobility Print with mDNS, DNS, or known host printer discovery options. There is no user interaction if you’re using mDNS or DNS printer discovery options to see the print queues. If you’re using the known host printer discovery option, the user is guided to download the Mobility Print installer to run on their computer, which installs the print queues automatically.

iOS

Managed: Mobility Print with the known host printer discovery option. Mobility Print guides the user to download a profile on their iOS device to see the printers.

NOTE

If you’re using Jamf Pro, you’ll be able to deploy print queues to your iOS devices with Mobility Print.

It’s only with the known host printer discovery option that you have to install the iOS profile to see the print queues.

Chromebooks

Managed: Mobility Print with the known host printer discovery option to help automate the deployment to all the Chromebooks.

Unmanaged/BYOD: Mobility Print with mDNS or DNS printer discovery options. These two printer discovery options guide the user to download the Mobility Print Chrome app.

Android

Managed/Unmanaged/BYOD: Mobility Print with mDNS, DNS, or known host printer discovery options. There isn’t a managed option with Android. The end user is guided to install the Mobility Print app from the Google Play store.

Feature driven

If you’re after certain features listed below with Windows and macOS, then you’re best off using Print Deploy even if it’s an unmanaged/BYOD environment:

  • The ability to select a particular vendor print driver.

  • Stapling, hole punching and other specific print driver options.

  • Setting defaults on the print driver like grayscale and duplex.

  • Automate the deployment of print queues for Windows and macOS.
